What is Ms. Shershin's background?
I was born in Miami, Florida. Both my parents, Drs. Carmen and Anthony Shershin, are professors of mathematics at Florida International University. I have two sisters. My sister Roxana runs Digital Additive, a digital advertising company. My younger sister Tania works as Optimization Vice President for Expedia Group.
I grew up in Miami. After high school, I studied Accounting at University of Miami and Georgetown University in Washington D.C.. I switched majors to elementary education and received my Bachelor's Degree in elementary education from Florida International University. I graduated cum laude with an area of concentration in mathematics. I completed my graduate degree with Jones International University where I graduated summa cum laude with a Masters in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment.
After graduating from college, I moved back to the Washington D.C. area to teach in the Montgomery County Public School System in Silver Spring, MD. I taught five years at Oakland Terrace Elementary School. Next, I moved back to Miami and taught at Gulliver Academy for four years. I moved to Sacramento in June 2005 and worked as an SRA Open Court Reading consultant and co-founded a non-profit organization called SaramEducate dedicated to providing educational enrichment to children from widely varying school systems and families. I taught 9 years at St. Hope Public School PS7, Courtyard Private School, and Westlake Charter School. This is my tenth year with City Schools of Decatur. I am excited to teach a wonderful third grade class.
Why do I teach?
I chose to become an educator because I find it rewarding. I enjoy working with children and watching them grow. Students today need positive role models. They are our future. Teaching students is not only a way to give back to society but also a way to ensure the future will be its best.
What is the underlying tone of my classroom?
I create a nurturing classroom environment in which all students are respectful towards each other. Students are encouraged to take risks and are applauded for their efforts. I also make sure to give my students voice and choice in their learning. They choose their own writing topics and reading books. I believe that one of the greatest things a student can learn is how to work cooperatively. Spending time assigning roles in a group and working out problems they encounter with one another is time well spent. My educational philosophy is that all students are able to learn. Some students learn differently and some need more time to master topics, but all students are capable.
